Tenuate is an appetite suppressant, used along with an overall diet plan in order to treat obesity and reduce weight.

Take on an empty stomach, once daily, 30-60 minutes before breakfast. Do not increase your Tenuate dose or take it more frequently or for a longer period than prescribed. The drug can be habit forming and taking more of it or taking it for longer than prescribed may cause serious side effects. This medication is usually taken for 8 to 12 weeks. If you have used Tenuate for a while, do not suddenly quit taking it without first consulting your physicain.

Store at room temp. away from heat, light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.

If you miss a dose of Tenuate, take it as soon as possible, but if it is already after 4 pm, skip the dose you missed and take only the next one as scheduled. Avoid taking a double dose.

Possible side effects of Tenuate, which may go away by themselves, include restlessness, nervousness, difficulty sleeping, and dry mouth. If you have side effects that persist or are bothersome, inform your physicain.

A combination of Tenuate with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) could result in dangerously high blood pressure as well as other serious side effects. Do not use Tenuate and MAOIs together or within two weeks of each other (if you have taken MAOIs, wait 14 days before starting to use Tenuate, and vice versa). Use of tricyclic antidepressants with diethylpropion may cause high blood pressure or irregular heartbeat, and may also lower the effectiveness of blood-pressure lowering medications such as guanethidine. Tenuate may interact with diabetic medication and alter its effects. A combination of barbiturates and Tenuate may hurt the effects of both drugs. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) increases Tenuate elimination. Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) decreases Tenuate elimination. The safety and effectiveness of taking Tenuate in conjunction with SSRIs and various other psychotherapeutic agents has not been proven.

Do not engage in potentially dangerous activities or important activities that require concentration and coordination before you know how you are reacting to Tenuate. The drug has the potential of hurting your ability to focus and remember important and everyday things. Actions such as driving a car or using a can opener may seem like a challenge. If you are going to have any medical or dental treatments, surgery, or emergency care, tell the staff that you are using Tenuate. Tenuate passes into breast milk. If you are or plan to start breast-feeding while using Tenuate, consult a physicain about possible risks to your baby. Taking higher doses of Tenuate or taking for longer than prescribed may cause serious side effects. Consult a physicain or pharmacist before you begin taking any new medicine.
