Sonata is used to treat sleep problems (insomnia) in the short term.

Sonata works quickly. Take it immediately before bedtime or when already in bed and having trouble sleeping. To minimize side effects while you are awake, take Sonata only when you will be able to get at least four hours of sleep. Do not take with or immediately after a heavy meal. Use Sonata exactly as was prescribed for you. Sonata can be habit forming, so do not take more, more often, or for a longer period than you were directed. Do not use Sonata for more than ten days without your physicain's approval. If your sleep problems continue, consult a physicain. If you have used Sonata for a while, do not stop using it without consulting a physicain first.

Some possible side effects of Sonata are headache, drowsiness, nausea, and stomach. If these persist or are bothersome, consult a physicain. If you experience any of the following more serious side effects, consult a physicain immediately: dizziness, weakness, loss of coordination, muscle joint pain. Rarer side effects of Sonata are mental/mood changes, persistent trouble sleeping, memory problems, loss of appetite, tingling of the hands or feet, rash, itching, tremors, eye/ear problems. Rarer still are fast/slow/irregular pulse, chest pain, trouble breathing, blood in the stool, unusual thirst, change in amount of urine. If you experience any of the symptoms lised above, contact a physicain immediately.

Inform your physicain about all the drugs you may be using, whether prescription or non-prescription, especially if you are using: rifamycin antibiotics (e.g., rifampin, rifabutin), antidepressants (e.g., imipramine, amitriptyline), ulcer medication (e.g., cimetidine). It is also important to notify your physicain if you are using any medications that cause drowsiness, such as other medicines for sleep, sedatives, tranquilizers, anti-anxiety drugs, narcotic pain relievers (e.g., codeine), psychiatric medications (e.g., thioridazine), anti-seizure medications (e.g., phenytoin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine), muscle relaxants, and antihistamines such as diphenhydramine. Check the labels on any medications you are using, especially cough/cold medications, since they may contain antihistamines (e.g., diphenhydramine). Talk to a physicain or pharmacist about safe use of these drugs.

Before using Sonata, inform your physicain about your entire medical history, including allergies, liver disease, lung/breathing problems, mental/mood problems, alcohol use or drug dependence. When you are taking Sonata, be cautious when you perform dangerous tasks that require alertness (such as driving or operating machinery). Do not consume alcohol, because it may intensify some side effects of Sonata, such as dizziness and drowsiness. In the elderly Sonata should be used with caution, because elderly patients may be more sensitive to its effects. When you stop using Sonata, you may have trouble sleeping for a night or two. If you keep having sleep problems after that, inform your physicain. In pregnant women, Sonata should be used only when clearly needed. Consult a physicain about possible risks. Breastfeedign women should consult a physicain before using Sonata. Sonata passes into breast milk and may harm the nursing baby.
