Ritalin is a CNS (central nervous system) stimulant, used in the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), narcolepsy, and potentially other conditions as determined by the physicain. Ritalin works by increasing attention and decreasing restlessness in children and adults who are overactive, impulsive, and having difficulties concentrating. The medicine should be given as a part of an overall social and psychological treatment program. Ritalin is available only with a physicains' prescription. For reasons of children's safety, prescriptions cannot be refilled, and a new written prescription must be obtained for the physicain each time. Methylphenidate may also be given to patients with depressive disorder secondary to physical illness (patients who cannot take antidepressant medicines).

Take exactly as directed. Taking too much may induce dependence. If you think this medicine is not working properly after you have taken it for several weeks, consult your physicain. Take with food. Swallow the capsules/tablets whole: do not crush or chew them. To help prevent trouble in sleeping, take the last dose of the short-acting tablets before 6 p.m., unless otherwise directed by your physicain.

Store away from heat, direct light, and moisture, and keep out of the reach of children.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Then take any remaining doses for the day at regular intervals. Do not take a double dose or take two doses too closely.
