Prozac is used for the treatment of depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder symptoms, behaviors associated with bulimia nervosa, and other psychiatric symptoms and conditions.

Follow your physicain's directions as you would with any prescription medication. The usual recommendation is to take one tablet in the morning. It can be taken with or without food. Prozac, like all antidepressants, works in the long term. The first goal is to relieve depressive symptoms that are having an adverse effect on your life: symptom relief usually takes a few weeks. The second goal is to keep depression from returning, and for that purpose Prozac is usually taken for six to twelve months.

Store at room temp., away from heat and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.

If you miss taking a dose of Prozac, don't take a double dose the next time. Just resume your regular Prozac schedule with the next dose.

Side effects of Prozac are usually mild and rarely prevent the patient from continuing to use Prozac. Some Prozac users experience nausea, difficulty sleeping, drowsiness, anxiety, nervousness, weakness, loss of appetite, tremors, dry mouth, sweating, decreased sex drive, impotence, or yawning. Discuss the symptoms with your physicains if they are bothersome, but they should usually go away by themselves after a few weeks of use. A rash can be a sign of a serious medical condition. See your physicain immediately if you develop a rash while taking Prozac.

Combining Prozac with one of the drugs known as MAO inhibitors or MAOIs is dangerous. If you are taking a MAOI, do not take Prozac. If you have taken a MAOI, wait at least 2 weeks before taking Prozac. If you have taken Prozac, wait at least 5 weeks after you stop taking Prozac before taking a MAOI. Also, do not take Thioridazine at the same time as Prozac. If you have taken Prozac and stopped, wait at least 5 weeks before using Thioridazine. The active ingredient in Prozac, Prozac Weekly, generic versions of Prozac offered by other manufacturers, and Sarafem, is the same: fluoxetine hydrochloride.
