Provigil is used to help patients with certain sleep-related conditions, such as narcolepsy or obstructive sleep apnea, stay awake during the day. In correct use, Provigil should not affect nighttime sleep. Provigil will not cure the condition for which it is used. It will only help control the symptoms for as long as it is used.

Take exactly as directed. If too much is taken, it may become habit-forming. Dosage will be different for different patients. Generally speaking, the usual recommended dose for adults with a condition of narcolepsy is 200 mg a day, taken in the morning.

Keep out of the reach of children. Store away from heat, direct light, or moisture.

If you miss a dose of Provigil and you remember it before noon the same day, take it as soon as you can. If you only remember later, skip the missed dose so that the medicine won't interfere with your nighttime sleep. Do not double your dose the next day; taking a double dose may be dangerous. Just resume your usual dosing schedule.

Provigil is generally well-tolerated, but it may cause side effects in some people. The most commonly reported side effects are headache, nausea, nervousness, stuffy nose, diarrhea, back pain, anxiety, trouble sleeping, dizziness, and upset stomach. Provigil may also cause the following uncommon but serious side effects. Call your physicain or get emergency help if you experience any of the following: chest pain, mental problems, allergic reactions such as a rash or hives, other allergic reactions.
