Protonix is used to treat damage to the esophagus associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other conditions involving excessive stomach acid production. It works by decreasing the amount of acid produced in the stomach.

Take exactly as directed. Take each dose with a full glass of water, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole: do not crush, chew, or split. Do not stop taking Protonix even if you begin to feel better. Your symptoms may improve before the condition is fully treated.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, but if it is almost time for the next dose, just skip the missed dose and go on as usual. Avoid taking a double dose.

Side effects are usually mild or nonexistent. If you experience an allergic reaction seek emergency medical help. If you experience a mild side effect, continue to take Protonix and talk to your physicain. Mild side effect may include flatulence (gas); upset stomach or diarrhea; insomnia; or rash.

Tell your physicain if you are using any other medications, especially ketoconazole (Nizoral), ampicillin (Omnipen, Principen), or iron (Feosol, Mol-Iron, Fergon, Femiron, others). If you are taking any of these, your physicain may tell you not to take Protonix or may adjust your dosage. Other drugs may also interact with Protonix, impairing the effect of either and/or creating unwanted side effects. Consult your physicain before taking any new medication.

If you have liver disease, consult your physicain. Protonix is unlikely to harm an unborn baby, but if you are pregnant, consult your physicain before taking Protonix. Protonix may or may not pass into breast milk and it may or may not harm a nursing baby. If you are breast-feeding, consult your physicain before taking Protonix. If you suspect an overdose, seek emergency medical attention.
