Effexor XR is an anti-depressant, thought to work on two chemicals in the brain (serotonin and norepinephrine) associated with depression. Effexor XR is most commonly prescribed for patients suffering from depressive symptoms such as feelings of sadness, worthlessness, or guilt; loss of interest in daily activities; changes in appetite; fatigue; excessive sleep; insomnia; and suicidal thoughts. Effexor XR is also prescribed to patients with symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder.

Use Effexor XR exactly as directed by your physicain. Take each dose with a full glass of water; take with food or milk to lessen stomach upset. Tablets should be swallowed whole. Do not stop taking Effexor XR without the approval of your physicain.

Store at room temp. away from sunlight, heat, and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.

If you have missed a dose, take the missed dose as soon as possible; but if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take only the next regularly scheduled one. Never take a double dose.

Some possible side effects of Effexor XR are drowsiness or dizziness; nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, abdominal pain, or loss of appetite or weight; mild tremor, anxiety, or agitation; headache or insomnia. Talk to your physicain about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome. Stop taking Effexor XR and seek immediate medical assistance if you experience any of the following: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, closing of your throat, swelling of your lips, tongue, or face, or hives); seizures; an irregular heartbeat; or severely high blood pressure (the symptoms of which are blurred vision and headache).

Do not take Effexor XR if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor such as Marplan, Nardil, or Parnate in the last 14 days. Tell your physicain before taking Effexor XR if you have liver or kidney disease, heart disease or high blood pressure, or seizures or epilepsy. Pregnant or breastfeedign women should not use Effexor XR before consulting with a physicain.
