Accolate is a synthetic leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA), which is used for the continuous treatment and prevention of asthma. Accolate works by blocking the effects of cysteinyl leukotrienes on an asthmatic person's CysLT1 receptor, thus lowering the leukotriene levels in a patient's body. This results in lesser constriction and inflammation of the airways, as well as a reduction in mucus buildup in the lungs. Accolate is also the first drug of its kind to be marketed in the USA.

The most common side effects for users of Accolate are headaches, nausea, and hypersensitivity. In rare cases, it may cause the elevation of one or more liver enzymes in a patient, which can result in symptomatic hepatitis and hyperbilirubinemia.
